CONTR IB UT ORS 1 2 3 1 Marie Cullinan has had a love for coffee as well as a curiosity about it for years. While living on the West Coast, she heard about the American Barista & Coffee School, and attended classes to dive in a little deeper, and that was where she first fully understood the concept of third-wave coffee. After a short stint roasting for a small coffee chain, Marie purchased The Library Coffeehouse in Tampa, Fla. She and her partner of seven years, Dawn, run the shop together. Co-hosting the first barista jam and latte-art throwdown in Tampa was an exciting accomplishment, especially just coming out of the first year anniversary of the shop. In addition to her passion for coffee, she loves traveling and visiting lighthouses. (Pull, p. 22) and/or written work to fine publications such as The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Time Out NY, and this little gem you've got in your hot little hands. She can be reached at meister@justmeister.com. (Pull, p. 23; Born Again Blend, p. 72) 5 Sam Penix is the owner of Everyman Espresso, a staple of the New York coffee scene, with two locations in Manhattan. Sam is building cafés that are centered in community and subvert the service expectations of traditional café models. He strives to advance the craft of coffee as an accomplished competitor and certified regional judge. In his spare time, Sam enjoys hiking volcanoes. (Field Report: Nicaragua, p. 36) 2 4 5 7 6 8 Darrin Daniel is the green coffee buyer for Stumptown Coffee Roasters, a Portland, Ore.-based coffee company founded in 1999. He has worked in specialty coffee for over 20 years, and previously served as the coffee and tea buyer for Allegro Coffee Company/Whole Foods Market from 2003 to 2011. He serves on the advisory board for Roast Magazine. He has traveled in pursuit of the finest coffees in over 19 producing countries. Darrin has served as an international judge for Cup of Excellence and other national coffee competitions in Brazil, Peru, Honduras, El Salvador, and Rwanda. A graduate of Naropa University in Boulder, Colo. in literature and poetics, Darrin founded Cityful Press books in 1993, publishing authors such as Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, filmmaker Harry Smith, Anne Waldman, Gregory Corso, and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. (Field Report: Ethiopia + Kenya, p. 40) 3 Rev. Ian Fretheim is the director of sensory analysis for Café Imports. Ordained as a Buddhist priest in 2012, he can often be found levitasting after hours in the Café Imports cupping lab. This strange and ancient practice was caught on film by the crew at Perspective Films late one night, and subsequently posted at www.vimeo.com/55564940. These sessions of extraordinary concentration and detachment, which can last for up to four hours, yield insights not only into the nature of cup scoring and unlocking the matrix of coffee attributes, but also into that more complex and mysterious formation: that of the cupper himself. (Recalibration, p. 84) 4 Erin Meister (or just "Meister" to everyone) is a coffee professional with a totally-not-at-all-secret double life as a writer and a journalist. (Worst. Clark. Kent. Ever.) When she's in her coffee cups, she's a regional representative for Counter Culture Coffee's Counter Intelligence education program. She also writes about coffee on the regular for Serious Eats (www.seriouseats.com), and has contributed editorial Training for all Segments of the Coffee Industry Grow your passion by building your skills: from sourcing to preparation. Nicknamed "the Techie" by staff, she also designed and launched the SCAA's first social-media strategy in 2009. (Foam, p. 16) 7 Chad Trewick, senior director of coffee and tea, began his career with Caribou Coffee in 1993 as a barista. His charge today is to uphold quality standards while encouraging farmers to engage in Rainforest Alliance certification to comply with Caribou's commitment to 100% participation. He strives to strengthen the supply chain through prioritizing mutually beneficial relationships at origin. Chad travels in search of the world's finest coffees, to support key supply relationships, and to identify where positive impacts can be made. Chad serves on the SCAA's Board of Directors and is liaison to the Sustainability Council. He works to mainstream responsible practices and is passionate about coffee and sustainability—preserving the planet's people and places for future generations. (Rust on the Rampage, p. 78) 8 Ryan Willbur has been involved with specialty coffee since 2003. As a barista, he has served coffee in Portland, Ore.; Minneapolis; and Los Angeles. Currently, Ryan is the marketing coordinator for La Marzocco USA. His job involves figuring out new and creative ways to use espresso machines, and bridging the gap between technicians and baristas. After having competed in many barista competitions, Ryan is currently enjoying judging. When not working with coffee, Ryan can be found running, cooking, or playing with his dog, Josephine. You can also always find Ryan at www.rwillbur.com. (Pull, p. 21)
