HE'S A LONGTIME FAMILIAR FIGURE at barista championships around the world, often serving as either head judge or mas - ter of ceremonies. He's also among the people most responsible for one of the longest-running and most-respected national barista champion - ships—Mexico's—which recently crowned its 13 th champion. He's a debonair figure, charming and gracious in his many high-profile roles either onstage or off. He's constantly friendly, engag - ing, and a champion of baristas the world over, but since he's always making sure the spotlight is on the competitors and not himself, not many people know his background or how he found himself on those many competition stages across the globe. He's José Cleofas Arreola, and we're delighted to share his story here. Kenneth R. Olson: Can you tell us a little about your personal history, where you were born and raised, and your family? José Cleofas Arreola: I grew up in Tijuana, B.C. (Baja California). My mother was a homemaker and my father was a businessman involved with importing fine wines and distilled spirits for the state of Baja California. He was also very active in community organizations. I have four sisters and one brother. My sisters are involved in their own businesses, as well. One of them owns a Montessori school. Another one is a child psychol - ogist with her own firm, and is involved in treating children with autism. Another sister owns a party- rentals firm that organizes events. My brother manages a concrete-block plant that is part of the family's business. José Cleofas Arreola Worldwide Coffee & Barista Ambassador By Kenneth R. Olson MASTER 83 www.baristamagazine.com
