GENDER IN THE GLOBAL NORTH: OUR SURVEY RESULT ARE IN IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE service jobs can become profession- alized based on the quality of our pour or our attention to how the air-conditioning in the café is affecting extraction, it is easy to feel authoritative about the drinks we make. On the other hand, every- day comments from demanding customers are often a reminder that we're rarely in the position of being allowed to be right. A more robust analysis of The Chain Collaborative's gender survey (which followed the introduction of the subject of gender in the Global North, in the April+May 2015 issue of Barista Magazine) will be printed in the October+November 2015 issue of this publication, but one thing has been revealed through a preliminary analysis of the results: Most of us, no matter what positions we hold today, started as baristas. Below, we begin to share some findings from the survey, and start to look at the gender-based challenges of obtaining and holding a position of authority in the coffee industry. Note: While survey participants were asked to identify their gender, they were not given a list of choices from which to choose. This was done so that they could specifically answer in any way they chose to identify. Except for one participant listing they were gender-neutral, all participants listed they were male, female, or left the space blank. As a result, the results of the survey are skewed toward discussing males and females. Answers from participants who left spaces blank were not able to be considered for certain questions, as we were not able to assume their gender identification. —Nora Burkey F O A M : N E W S HOW MANY MANAGERIAL POSITIONS HAVE YOU HAD IN THE COFFEE INDUSTRY?
