C O N T R I B U T O R S 1 Julio Alejandro is a renowned wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, and he is also a certi- fied judge for the national barista competition. To see his work, visit www.julioalejandro.com. (Cover photo and photography for Rebecca Atienza, p. 50) 2 Tracy Allen is CEO of Brewed Behavior, a consultancy founded to offer comprehensive support to all segments of the coffee industry. He also currently serves as president for the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). As one of the original members of the U.S. Barista Championship (USBC) Committee and the first chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee for the World Barista Championship (WBC), Tracy has trained mul- tiple national and regional barista champions, and served as a judge and judges' trainer for the USBC and WBC. He is also an SCAA "Supertaster," certified cupper, and Q-grader instructor. (Cashbox, p. 74) 3 Andrew Bettis is a Chattanooga, Tenn., native and is known widely for losing AeroPress competitions and placing dead last in latte art throwdowns. He is a cofounder of Copacetic Coffee and is currently operations manager at Ipsento in the great city of Chicago, where he lives with his beautiful wife. (Takeaway, p. 18) 4 Stephanie Frommlet is a chalkboard artist and freelancer living in Portland, Ore. She's studied classical animation, and loves to stare at fonts. She once worked as the mall Easter Bunny. Her work can be viewed at www.stephaniefrommlet.com. (Illustration for What We Talk about When We Talk about Coffee, p. 68) 5 Steen Heine is a freelance photographer based in Aarhus, Denmark. He specializes in photographing people in a variety of settings. You can view his work online at www.500px.com/steenheinephotography. (Photos for Pull, p. 22) 6 Erin Meister (you can call her just "Meister") has always led a kind of weird, caffein- ated double life. As a coffee professional, she's been a barista, retail manager, whole- sale-support representative, and educator; and salesperson; as a journalist she's written and/or edited work for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Serious Eats, Saveur.com, and Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine—as well as the gem you're holding in your hot little hands. These days she can be found selling green coffee for Café Imports, riding her bike around the beautiful Twin Cities, and finally (finally!) taking a break from blogging. You can email her at meister@justmeister.com. (What We Talk about When We Talk about Coffee, p. 68) 7 Anna Oleksak is the communications coordinator for the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe's (SCAE) Poland chapter. She is also a national championships coordinator for World Coffee Events, and she volunteers as a sensory judge in barista championships. Anna spends her days coordinating marketing and strategy for the Polish specialty-coffee roaster Kofi Brand. Check out her blog at www.coffeedilemma.pl. (Pull, p. 22) 8 Like Submariner, Jack Pollock is at war with the surface world, and his unique illustra- tions bear eloquent witness to this constant struggle. He began his career at a tender age back in the late 1980s, working for Dark Horse Comics. There, he created Devil Chef, and still isn't sorry. After that auspicious debut, he's done illustrations and comics for dozens of lucky publishers like this one. Sorry, ladies, he's married! Sorry, dogs, he has a dog! (Illustration for Cashbox, p. 74) 9 Ashley Rodriguez thought that she'd take a break from teaching middle-school science and putz around in a coffee shop for a few months. She ended up digging it way more than teaching (and was vaguely better at it). After spending five years making coffee in New York, she now works for Sightglass Coffee in San Francisco. Follow her on Twitter at @ashcommonname. (New Adventures in Cold Brew, p. 76) 10 Joshua Vasko is a commercial and lifestyle photographer out of Charlotte, N.C. Passionate about all things photography and all things coffee, he is also a barista at The Daily Press, serving up great coffee all day.
