The Barista Guild of America's Camp Pull-A-Shot—which is essentially a retreat where baristas come together to take classes, compete in team exercises, share knowledge, and have fun—has taken place successfully in Southern California for two years. Responding to countless requests for Camp Pull-A-Shot to have an East Coast version, the BGA organized and held this first East Coast Camp in June at the Mountain Lake Resort in Virginia, famously known as the setting for the film Dirty Dancing. Now it'll be known for barista awesomeness. With the exception of my team taking apart our popcorn popper to slow down the roast curve, the first round was organized chaos. Team 8 threw a wrench into the second round of teams, when they purchased all the available brewing equipment, then doubled the prices. After stalled negotiations, eventually our equivalent of regulators stepped in and helped negotiations move along. Even in our games, we somehow figured out a way to operate outside the box, imitating real life situations. After the three lovely judges had tasted all the coffees, the winner was a Pacamara variety from Team Baby's Corner. I have a feeling that Pete may have had some positive influence there.
