P U L L : E V E N T S THE BGE'S COLAB BELFAST BRINGS EUROPEAN BARISTAS TOGETHER PHOTOS BY JORDAN SANCHEZ The Barista Guild of Europe held its popular traveling workshop and lecture series, CoLab, in Belfast in November, a racting a endees from the U.K., Ireland, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. A whopping 37 percent of the a endees identifi ed as baristas, with the rest of the crowd comprising technicians, trainers, café managers, salespeople, and coff ee-business owners. In Belfast, CoLab a endees started their morning at General Merchants, a local café renowned for serving up great brunch. Speaker Ben Szobody of Pro Baristas led a workshop that encouraged a endees to take part in so -skills activities, which are typically part of Ben's training programs. Through participation, a endees were given tools with which to identify what type of learner they are and how they fi t into a learning environment. The panel discussion, "What's Unique about Coff ee in Belfast?" brought together coff ee professionals (le to right) Ryan Lord of Lost & Found, Ryan Kane of Bailies Coff ee, and Stuart Ritson of Cafe Imports Europe, who serves as the BGE Events Chair. CoLab includes a Community Events day, and this one featured a presentation and cupping with Cafe Imports at Established. These fringe events are open to CoLab ticket holders and the wider community, which makes them a fantastic opportunity for the visiting international community to connect with the local coff ee scene. Fermentor Kathe Kaczmaryk led an interactive and practical workshop for a endees to create a jar of sauerkraut. A high percentage of the audience— including the two men in this photo—were completely new to the idea of home fermentation, but had a lot of fun learning about the process.
