CONT RI B UT OR S 1 2 3 4 1 Tracy Allen is CEO of Brewed Behavior, founded to offer comprehensive support to all segments of the coffee industry. After graduating from the University of Missouri with a B.A. in economics, he was recruited by Procter & Gamble to take on the newly created position of beverage specialist. He went on to manage operations for a small Midwest specialty-coffee roaster, which led him to the position of VP of Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Co., where he launched and grew the wholesale division. As one of the original members of the U.S. Barista Championship Committee and the first chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee for the World Barista Championship, Tracy has trained multiple national and regional barista champions, and served as a judge and judges' trainer for the USBC and WBC. He is also an SCAA "Supertaster," certified cupper and Q-grader instructor. (Cashbox, p. 70) 2 6 5 6 5 3 7 8 10 After a short stint as a public-school art teacher and further graduate work in intercultural studies, Kevin Bohlin's fascination with coffee brought him to San Francisco, where he became a barista and coffee educator for Ritual Coffee Roasters. In his first year of competing, Kevin made it to the finals of the 2011 United States Barista Championship. He recently started a new coffee company: St. Frank Coffee, in San Francisco where he is combining his passion for coffee, service, education, and cross-cultural connections. St. Frank will be opening coffee service in San Francisco in the spring of 2013 with new relationship coffees from Honduras. (Field Report: Honduras, p. 40) 9 11 After selling his award-winning café and being promoted to the executive position of stay-at-home dad, Aaron Duckworth keeps his barista skills sharp by managing Pórtico, a café within his church. Aaron is passionate about contributing to the local Kansas City coffee community by training his staff at Pórtico to go out and work at other quality-focused coffee companies.  Barista training and other services are available through his coffee consulting company, Coffee With A. Duck. (Pull, p. 18) 4 Chris Elliott is originally from somewhere in Washington state, but his coworkers at Prima Coffee pretend that he is from California because he went to college there. Chris is a former barista and is now a marketing strategist and wholesale account manager at Prima. He also blogs a lot. He enjoys exploring the outdoors, cooking delicious meals, and hanging out with his girlfriend. He also claims to play the guitar—having earned a bachelor's degree in music—but his coworkers have never seen him do it. (Pull, p. 21) 5 9 12 Kari Guddeck has been meandering her way through the coffee industry for the last 18 years, after landing her first barista gig while in college at CU Boulder. After many barista jobs, café management, and sales rep positions, she currently finds herself as the marketing director for Barista Pro Shop and a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America's Competition Committee, and in her first year of head judging. Kari and her husband spend the majority of their time perfecting their cooking, imbibing, and DIY habits with their 4-year-old son, Kaeden. (Reviewing the Rules, p. 54) 6 13 12 10 barista magazine Al Higgins is a professional photographer specializing in commercial and editorial work. Al is also a Specialty Coffee Association of Europe– accredited judge and has judged the Irish Barista Championship, as well as the Irish Brewing Championship. He is also Ireland's reigning Cup Tasting Champion, and he traveled to Vienna to represent Ireland at the World of Coffee 2012 event. Al currently lives and works out of Dublin's city center. (Cover photo & photos for Dublin's Barista, p. 64) 7 Julie Levitt and Jason Burton are part of The LAB team. Based in Kansas City, Mo., this hybrid marketing company focuses entirely on the specialty beverage industry, from the top coffee-equipment manufacturers to distilleries to wineries. The LAB created the Caffeine Crawl concept in the fall of 2011, and work on various other projects within specialty coffee. (Pull, p. 25) 8 Blake McKinney is a native of Nashville, Tenn. After moving to Louisville, Ky., for graduate school, he became one of the first employees of Prima Coffee Equipment. He loves good coffee and is embarrassed by all the awful coffee that he used to proudly drink. When not working for Prima, he can be found spending time with his wife and daughter, reading history books, and having his heart broken by the Chicago Cubs. (Pull, p. 21) 9 Christina Mosley Furr is a blogger, writer, and ethnographer from Fort Worth, Tx. She currently works as a lead barista at AVOCA coffee, the leading small-batch roaster in Fort Worth. She loves sipping a cup of coffee in the morning with her dog, Ollie. You can find further coverage of the Texas coffee scene at her blog, www.cupoftexas.wordpress.com. (Pull, p. 22) 10 After a brief and happy sojourn into New England, Simon Ouderkirk has only recently returned to his homeland, the hinterlands of upstate New York. Living in Saratoga Springs, he is in the process of opening cafés for the Buffalo staple Spot Coffee. When not choosing electrical plugs or training baristas, he enjoys cooking, rugby, and pretending to understand Pynchon. (Field Report: Providence, Rhode Island, p. 46) 11 Dave Ringwood has been involved in the specialty coffee industry for more than six years. He was a delivery driver for Olympia Coffee Roasting in its early days, then became lead technician for Espresso Service (EPNW). His current position as head of equipment customization, restoration, and design for Espresso Parts in Lacey, Wash., allows him to geek out with two of his loves: coffee and classic espresso machines. He gets inspired by 1970s motorcycles and is an electromechanical freak. He loves the Pacific Northwest, fishing, and spending time with his family and dogs. (Customized, p. 74) 12 Heather Ringwood plays a coffee professional by day and a dog-training cider enthusiast by night. She works at Espresso Parts and is the chair of the Specialty Coffee Association of America's Competition Committee. The only other thing she would like to do in life is to invent a time machine to create more time in the day to do all the things she loves to do. (Reviewing the Rules, p. 54) 13 A born-and-raised native Washingtonian/Seattleite (Ballard), Dave White now resides in Olympia, Wash., where he has been working for Espresso Parts for 10 years. A victim of Seattle's dot-com explosion/ implosion in the early 2000s, Dave settled back down in Olympia, where he previously attended the Evergreen State College and now acts as the creative director and art department for Espresso Parts. When not at work pushing pixels or drinking espresso, Dave spends his spare time dreaming of orchards, pickin' and pressing apples, and converting them to fine traditional craft ciders. Dave also maintains a blog about traditional-style craft ciders, and is a founding board member of the Northwest Cider Association. (Photography for Customized, p. 74)
