June 20-23, 2018 Amsterdam, Netherlands the 19 thWorld Barista THE FINAL DAY of the World Barista Championship (WBC) is always one of my favorite out of the whole year. It's also one that invariably breaks my heart. We hold our breath through the routines of the fi nal six competitors left standing after a previous few days of intense preliminary and semifi nal rounds by barista champions hailing from the farthest reaches of the globe. Often, the most polished presentations are not those delivered on the fi nal day; the stress is too intense as one by one, each fi nalist embarks on 15 minutes that might actually change their lives forever. How they're able to concentrate, perform, and prepare phenomenal coffees before tens of thousands of people is testament to the level of professionalism they have achieved. Like plenty of others, I cry through every WBC awards ceremony—for the winner, yes, but for those who don't emerge victorious, as well. There are always surprise moments that stay with us, ones we can't predict. One of the most joyous for me this year was seeing how thrilled Swiss Barista Champion Mathieu Theis was to win third place. He held his trophy high and skipped—he literally skipped—to the podium. Of course, we will remember the 2018 WBC for the history it made when Poland's Agnieszka Rojewska became the fi rst woman to win the title after 19 years of the competition. We should—and we do in the pages that follow—celebrate this achievement as hers as well as the international community's. We hope with this annual special section of articles about the WBC and the World of Coffee (WOC) Expo where it took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands, you catch glimpses of the many moments that will go down in history as special, as tremendous. We hope they'll move you as profoundly as they have us. —Sarah Allen Game Changer: WBC Champion Agnieszka Rojewska: Page 74 Our Champion: quotes from Women Coffee Leaders: Page 80 The WBC and WOC in Photos: Page 86 Signature Drinks of the WBC Finalists: Page 92 SPECIAL SECTION 73
