P U L L : E V E N T S Clockwise from top left: The fi nal of three rounds in The Barista League U.S.A. competition was a mystery round, which competitors would soon fi nd out was a brew test on the Poursteady. This automated pourover machine had to be dialed-in according to the coffees used (generously provided by Onyx Coffee Lab), and then they were cupped by the judges. At the end of the event in Philadelphia, emcee T. Ben Fischer sprayed Steve Moloney with a bottle of champagne to celebrate the success of the inaugural Barista League U.S.A. Tour. As the Philly event was held at Ultimo Coffee's beautiful new roasting space, the spraying took place just outside. In Kansas City, Team The Timeliners (Angela Ferrara at left, with Cassie Ash) won top honors. Unbeknownst to them when this photo was taken, they would be the top-scoring team overall in the TBL U.S.A. Tour, earning them spots on the Ally Coffee Champs trip to Colombia (see page 42 for photos from that trip). If we're judging by creative and super-unique matching team outfi ts, then the Kansas City tour stop wins for the most enthusiastic teams. Pic- tured here, Team The Awful Gatos (Alex Rea and Christopher Oppenhuis) present their drinks to the judges, while other teams look on. In Philadelphia, second-place-fi nishing Team Groom S Tamper (Carol Stamper and Kareem A. Groomes) at left cheer for winners Team Water Babies, which was made up on Kendra Sledzinski and Stephen Welch, who was a last-minute replacement for Tara Bowler. The volunteer crew at the Kansas City Barista League event takes a well-deserved break in the judges' circle. 28 barista magazine
