"The auction serves the purpose of highlighting fl avor profi les that are not common to Brazil at all," says Noah Namowicz of Cafe Imports. After several days of intensive cuppings, punctuated by farm visits and other activities, an invited international jury selects the top lots, which are then auctioned off in a live, high-energy, and wildly entertaining event with most of the producers present to revel in the celebration of their coffees. The group tours Fazenda Irmãs Pereira, a huge, beautiful farm with different sections in various stages of plant growth. The host hotel's town of São Lourenço is famous for its natural springs and boasts some awesome animal-themed phone booths. Geoffrey Meeker from French Truck Coffee in New Orleans hands out some of the dozens of pairs of shoes he bought to donate to the kids at the CriaCarmo Project. The CriaCarmo Project founded by CarmoCoffees is an after- school program for underprivileged kids from Carmo de Minas, which focuses on sports, education, and teamwork.
