Clockwise from top: Noah (far left) and Luiz Paulo lead the international jury through a coffee farm outside the town of Carmo de Minas. "One of the other cool parts [of Carmo Best Cup] is that buyers and roasters and cuppers all get to interact with each other," says Noah. "[Cupping] is such a solitary experience—it's done alone. So here they get to interact with each other and get a different perspective." The Cafe Imports team poses for a photo as the daily rains paused for the afternoon and ushered in a welcome sun break. The staff at CarmoCoffees sets up the tables for another round of cupping. They have some cool custom gear like this hot-water pistol that make for streamlined and effi cient cuppings. Each day started with an intensive cupping and calibration session where the judges talked about what stood out to them on the table. "We have all levels of coffee-buying experience," Noah says. "We try to have as much diversity on these trips as humanly possible, from experience, backgrounds, nationalities, gender, everything." 39
