The People's World AeroPress Champion Carolina Ibarra Garay isn't simply a champion on the competition stage: The 2018 World AeroPress winner is also a champion of other coffee professionals, and has expressed her determination to use her newfound fame and glory (or at least her newfound bragging rights) to make waves in the competitive coffee circuits that are normally dominated by men. "Winning a world title in coffee as an immigrant woman certainly means a lot," Carolina told Barista Magazine Online's Chris Ryan shortly after her win. "I carry with me a responsibility, and I have a voice now that can reach further." The WAC champ, who grew up in Colombia and is now a manager at Café de Leche in Los Angeles, continues by saying, "I want equality in coffee competitions, and I want to see rooms filled with women champs. My goal is to be there for them, to coach, to help them prepare mentally to believe that they are winners already. I won the title for the U.S., but most importantly, I won it for all the women in coffee, especially the immigrant women." Over the past year, many champion and runner-up coffee competitors have echoed these sentiments, acknowledging that visibility by women, people of color, LGBTQ and gender non-binary/non-conforming people is a significant step toward a more inclusive and diverse specialty-coffee industry in general—which naturally benefits everyone. One of the unique aspects of the World AeroPress Championship is that all contestants use the same coffee (this year a Kenyan sourced by Cafe Imports and roasted by Sydney, Australia–based Single O), and aren't expected to "perform" in the way that Barista Championship competitors are. That level playing field, Carolina said, "makes the competition a bit tougher because you are being evaluated for making the best-tasting cup of coffee, and there's no chance one competitor can win simply because of their coffee." Perhaps that is all the more reason Carolina (and many other competitors who represent a minority in specialty) feels so certain about the potential for more women and other types of coffee competitors to feel their power and step into the spotlight. We unabashedly hope she's right, and we hope her example shines for all the cafeteras and cafeteros who are interested in stepping up to the judges' table with a delicious offering and a smile. Congratulations, Carolina! Refresher Than Ever Roasted coffee is obviously pretty great, but don't sleep on green coffee, either: Dr. Smoothie's new Refreshers line combines the herbal freshness of green-coffee extract with dynamic fruit and vegetable flavors as well as real cane sugar and stevia for a—you guessed it—refreshing drink that is a welcome break from brewed coffee. (Even the most passionate barista can't live on espresso alone, after all.) The Refreshers line combines green coffee with interesting, light flavors like strawberry and acai, watermelon with cucumber and mint, and wild berries with hibiscus—a veritable buffet of healthful tonics to soothe your normally caffeine-addled heart and mind. Naturally there is still plenty of caffeine to be found in green coffee, but before roasting the seeds are far less soluble— so the hyper-making effect is gentler, but there's still some potent antioxidant action happening in the cup. In addition to the softer "lift" from the lighter caffeine content, the handcrafted concentrates get blended up with an easy-breezy mix of ice and water, and are free of all the things everyone wants them to be free of: gluten, GMOs, high-fructose corn syrup, animal products of any kind, and artificial colors and preservatives. These might be exactly what the doctor ordered. (At least Dr. Smoothie, but we bet your GP would give you an agreeable second opinion.)
