The political and social issues before Ethiopia are beyond challenging, ranging from overt political pressure during the recent 2010 elections, to issues such as female genital mutilation and suppression of the media. Despite this, its coffee culture is the oldest on the planet, and its coffee is as dear to Ethiopians as anything else they produce as a country other than teff. groups: Tegu, Karogoto, and Ngunguru. Philip Home from CKCM mill took me on a visit to all three washing stations to walk through the process (see "Kenya Process Explained," page 45). It is so hard to fathom the numerous steps and details that produce coffee of a superior level. Kenya has a reputation, and it was clearly evident in my brief visit to Nyeri. The last day was another session of cupping with Ernest Njuguna from CKCM and the clarity and sparkle that is Kenya was happening with many of the AAs that we're able to see. As luck would have it, I was early in Kenya, too. I was going to have to wait and see what Barichu had to show us. Early signs from Ngunguru were encouraging and this down year in volume may signal a top year for quality. I wrapped up in Nairobi just in time to cup more coffees and to also be lucky enough to attend the opening of Dormans' flagship coffee shop in Karen Village. Dormans is known around the world for its quality green exports, but the company also has a strong café presence throughout Kenya. This café includes a beautiful brew bar and espresso service; a plush two-floor space with lots of room; and visual imagery of farms and the coffee experience. On my parting day, I had an interesting discussion with my taxicab driver about the upcoming elections in early March and a hope that the tribal fighting and riots of 2007 do not rear their head again. Kenya feels slightly pensive and let's hope that this change from President Kibaki is seamless. These are still volatile times, but Kenya as a country is on the rise as the African powerhouse in economic development. With an early-afternoon flight ahead and a brief layover back in Addis, it was time to head home and take stock of early 2013 prospects here in Africa. Ethiopia and Kenya are linked by a strong sense of pride and connection to what they grow. Ethiopia is the great-grandfather with all of the wisdom and depth, while Kenya is the young son who has learned from all that has come before. The two are inseparable from this buyer's perspective. Both provide a basket of immaculate flavors and experiences.
