EDITOR LETTE R everybody wins AT DUSK, WE EASED OUR WAY down the stairs from the Promenade des Anglais to the beach, the air seeming to soften a little with each wooden step. The strangely cerulean water of the Mediterranean Sea swirled toward a rosy sky, beneath which hundreds of merry coffee professionals laughed and lounged, champagne in hand, at this Coffee Kids beach party. Taking place on the opening night of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe's (SCAE) annual World of Coffee event, the party was a perfect start to what would be an extraordinarily memorable few days. The first day of the SCAE had been a good one, kicking off not only the trade show, but also the World Latte Art Championship, the World Coffee In Good Spirits Championship, the World Cup Tasters Championship, and the World Coffee Roasting Championship. (These competitions are operated by World Coffee Events, which also manages the World Barista Championship [WBC] and the World Brewers Cup Championship.) With such an esteemed roster of special events—not to mention the picturesque location of the SCAE show—thousands upon thousands of baristas, roasters, café owners, and greencoffee buyers had descended upon the city of Nice in France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in arguably the most ideal time of year to enjoy the seaside city. I can safely say that any coffee professional lucky enough to find himself in a situation like this knows his good fortune, as does the green buyer who traverses the most beautiful and remote lands of East Africa, or South and Central America. Even newbie baristas attending their first Thursday Night Throwdown or Coffee Fest almost always appreciate the opportunity to step outside of their daily workplace to explore the lively and vibrant landscape of the larger specialtycoffee industry. We are all fortunate that coffee allows us to travel the world, both in person and online. 14 barista magazine BARISTA M AGA Z I N E And in print. We are always thrilled to release the WBC commemorative issue at this time of year. Since the start of Barista Magazine in 2005, we've featured the winner of the WBC on the cover of the edition published immediately following the competition. You see, however, that we're making small deviations from the original model by including World Brewers Cup Champion Erin McCarthy on the cover of this issue, as well as WBC Champ Pete Licata. This was a decision I made spur-of-the-moment when Erin joined Pete on the floor of the WBC event space right after the awards ceremony, and both were flocked by hundreds of admirers asking for photos and autographs. Erin and Pete were ecstatic for one another's victory, and the overall achievement on behalf of the United States. And hey, Pete's already been on the cover of Barista Magazine (December+January 2012), so he was happy to share the spotlight for this one with his friend and peer, Erin. This is a sign of things to come. In this issue, I wax poetic about the SCAE show in Nice, the competitions that took place there, and the community that came together in coffee harmony because they are significant—quite significant, in fact. While I don't see the WBC losing its high regard any time soon, there is room at the top for these other championships, too. You can bet you'll be seeing a lot more about the art of coffee cocktails, specialty roasting, cup tasting, and latte art in Barista Magazine from here on out. The barista profession becomes more complex all the time, so it makes sense that once bar skills have been honed to perfection, baristas will pursue specializations, such as mastering the incorporation of alcohol into coffee beverages. We think it's all very exciting, and we're lucky to have a front-row seat. Of course, we're bringing you readers along with us to explore these new coffee vistas. We have so much to look forward to!
