THOUGH THE SPECIALTY-COFFEE INDUSTRY is by and large supportive and community-focused, almost everyone involved can remember a time when they felt stumped, stuck, or stopped by a myth: Women can't excel in coffee; cold-brewed coffee can never taste that great; the barista gig can never be a career. The wildly popular Barista Nation events adopt unique themes with each installment, and organizer Anastasia Chovan decided to face these myths head-on with the second Los Angeles Barista Nation, scheduled for September 28. The event is being graciously hosted by Curtis. Working with Brant Curtis of the host company, as well as a team of collaborators, Anastasia has developed an intriguing curriculum designed to empower attendees. Publisher of Barista Magazine, Kenneth R. Olson, will start the day with the lecture "The Myth of Business as a Zero-Sum Game," followed by a discussion by Tim Hibbs of OptiPure called "Water: What Does It Take to Make a Gold Cup?" Julia Leach of Toddy Café will engage the group with a conversation about cold-brew coffee methods, while Brant Curtis's lecture, "The Mystical Single Cup," will no doubt captivate the attendees. Heather Perry of Klatch Coffee will be joined by Alexandra LittleJohn of Verve Coffee Roasters to tackle the topic of obstacles facing women in the coffee industry and how to overcome them, which is sure to be one of the highlights of the Los Angeles event. As always, Barista Nation will include plenty of time for attendees to play on and experiment with machines, and the day will end with the PHOTO BY KENNETH R.
