PU L L : E V EN T S trek to Ma'velous Coffee & Wine Bar, where a custom La Marzocco caught my eye and distracted me for a minute from the breathtaking eco-chic design and compelling library. I think one of my favorite parts of this Crawl was getting to meet Bushra Burney, an inspiring and thoughtful blogger, Third Wave–coffee lover, and all-around fun person. As part of the Crawl team, I raced from café to café to make sure all was in order, and each time I'd arrive hot and panting only to have Bushra show up with a cool smile on her face shortly thereafter. Bushra was one of many wonderful people I had the privilege of meeting during Caffeine Crawl: San Francisco. (She blogs at www.caffeinatedmuslim.com.) As for the other route, Caffeine Crawl founder Jason Burton kicked it off with the great folks in a shared space: Blossom Coffee, Inc. and our sponsor, Stella di Caffè. Jeremy Kuempel, Blossom founder and engineering rock star, discussed the science of variables in coffee, while Devorah Freudiger of Equator wowed everyone with her barista skills, and Unic rep Brian Cornelson answered questions about the machines. The new space is industrial and welcoming, and it's awesome to see the new Blossom One Limited machine in action. In spite of a mix-up on which location would be featured on the Crawl, the folks at Ritual Coffee Roasters knocked it out of the park with a discussion of sourcing and direct-trade 24 barista magazine Beloved Bay Area barista Devorah Freudiger of Equator Coffees and Teas in San Rafael, Calif., demonstrated the prowess of the Unic Stella di Caffe machine during the San Francisco Caffeine Crawl. relationships, and led us in a tasting of Guatemalan, Costa Rican, and Colombian coffees. T-We's owner Christopher Coccagna did a wonderful job of conveying his passion for tea to Crawlers, who got to blend their own teas to take home, while learning about varieties, harvesting, production, blending, and brewing. The stunning walk up Portero Hill ended at Farley's, a café with an historic past. In the evening, the Bay Area Coffee Community (BACC) group teamed up with Caffeine Crawlers to make for one fun night headlined by the BACC latte art finals, with some stunning custom tampers for prizes, artisan tacos and beer, and the amazing Michael "Panda" Fernandez documenting. The folks at Baratza gave away a Vario-W grinder to the winner. All in all, it was a wonderful introduction to the vibrant San Francisco coffee, tea, and chocolate community in the context of a fun and education event. I drove away nibbling a Rip van Wafel, casting glances over my shoulder at the misty morning skyline of the City by the Bay, vowing to return. Soon. —Emily McIntyre
