among the people working behind the bar were the producers themselves: Rebecca Atienza and her father, Roberto. The baristas were overjoyed to see the Atienzas again and to have the opportunity to serve the coffee they had picked to Sigep's crowds. They also enjoyed reconnecting with each other and feeling that they were playing a significant part in helping the Italian baris- ta community grow closer together. It didn't go unnoticed either that three of the six finalists in the Italian Barista Championship were participants from the Barista & Farmer Project, including the 2014 Italian Barista Champion, Giacomo Vannelli. The Barista & Farmer Project is the brainchild of Francesco Sanapo, who worked closely with Rebecca to bring the vision of baristas working a coffee farm to fruition. When I saw him at Sigep, Francesco promised me he and his fellow organizers were close to having an official announcement about the second installment of Barista & Farmer, which will feature baristas from multiple countries. When summer rolls around and the thousands of beach umbrel- las and sunbathers come back out on the strand, I'm sure that Rimini will look nothing like the wintertime town I saw in January. What will be the same, however, is the energy and excitement I witnessed from the thousands of attendees of Sigep: Visitors to the SCAE's World of Coffee in June will no doubt be treated to the kind of spirited and warm welcome Italians are known for. As a group, they will all help propel the country's specialty-coffee culture forward. Multi-time Italian Barista Champion Francesco Sanapo invited Sigep a endees to try some of the coffee that was harvested by 15 Italian baristas who participated in Francesco's Barista & Farmer Project held in Puerto Rico in November of 2013.
