HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2014 SCAA SEATTLE SENT ITS RENOWNED rainy weather packing, and treated the thousands of attendees to the annual Specialty Coffee Association of America conference and trade show to sunshine for four straight days. That wasn't the only thing atypical about the show, however—the floor was packed to the gills on Friday and Saturday, leaving exhibitors twittering about the best turnout in years. No wonder, really: There were so many eagerly anticipated new products on display that coffee pros were clamoring to try them. Among the most talked-about coffee machines: the Blossom brewer at Unic's booth; La Marzocco's Strada EE and custom GS/3s; Wilbur Curtis' space-age Seraphim brewer; Victoria Arduino's VA388 Black Eagle's United States debut; and Dalla Corte's streamlined Evolution. The real action taking place during the SCAA show was tucked to the side in the U.S. Coffee Championships Arena, where the United States Barista, Latte Art, and Cup Tasters Championships, plus the U.S. Brewers Cup were taking place. By the end of the weekend, the nation's new coffee ambassadors had been culled from an unreal pool of talented professionals: Laila Ghambari of Cherry Street Coffee House in Seattle, and Todd Goldsworthy of Klatch Coffee in San Dimas, Calif., will travel to Rimini, Italy, in June to represent the United States at the World Barista Championship and the World Brewers Cup, respectively. Amanda Juris of Starbucks in Seattle, and Simeon Bricker of the Roasterie in Kansas City, Mo., head to Melbourne, Australia, in May to fight for the international titles at the World Cup Tasters Championship and the World Latte Art Championship, respectively. Other outstanding moments from the show? Well, our top two didn't even take place at the show itself: the world premiere of Brandon Loper's documentary A Film About Coffee—arguably the best movie about coffee culture, consumption, history, and luminaries we've ever seen— and the U.S. AeroPress Championship, which was held in a party setting at Stumptown Coffee's roastery, lending it a celebratory, colorful, and lively energy you just can't get on a trade-show floor. For our extensive coverage—more than 20 articles—about some of our favorite lectures and show-floor finds, the excitement from coffee competitions at the show and off-site, and profiles of attendees, competitors, and industry folks, check out Barista Magazine's blog under the category of SCAA Seattle 2014, at www. baristamagazine.com/blog. —Sarah Allen 31 www.baristamagazine.com B o o k 1 - 4 6 . i n d d 3 1 Book 1-46.indd 31 5 / 1 5 / 1 4 1 0 : 2 9 P M 5/15/14 10:29 PM
