B E F O R E This is an example resumé of someone applying for a standard barista job at a coffeeshop. Although details have been changed, this resumé reflects a number of errors or practices that many hiring managers have seen in resumés that have been submitted to them. How you order your experience matters: Many baristas come into coffee with a slew of past jobs. While your years as a teacher or the amazing internship you had are important, most managers are looking for any jobs you've had that display an aptitude for customer service, so put those first! Demonstrate knowledge without showing off: It's important to show that you're a qualified candidate, but be weary of coming off as braggy. Phrases like, "already have been trained" or "knowledgeable in all brewing techniques" can tell a hiring manager that you're resistant to change or think you know all there is to know. Write an objective for the job: Objectives are a great way to show your interest in a job, so make sure it's specific. "Students will often say in their objective, 'To obtain a degree in English,' which is great, but isn't why they're sending me their resumé," says Bailey Arnold, director of education for Gregory's Coffee. Be choosy about what you include: It's tempting to include a laundry list of tasks that you were entrusted with at any given shop, but you don't need to include how many times you were a key holder or that you learned the POS system at each location you've worked at. Better to stick with 2–3 bullet points per job. Be specific with your experience: If you streamline your bullet points, you'll leave room on your resumé to describe your experiences in a meaningful way. "Created a relaxed environment," doesn't mean anything if you don't hit on how you did that. "Managed staff..." well, how many people does that mean? One or 20? Use specific examples when you can. 79 www.baristamagazine.com B o o k 4 7 - 9 2 . i n d d 7 9 Book 47-92.indd 79 5 / 1 5 / 1 4 1 0 : 4 6 P M 5/15/14 10:46 PM
