19 www.baristamagazine.com series focuses on the origin side of specialty coffee. Travel Channel's Dangerous Grounds premiered in November 2012 and has aired two seasons. The show follows Todd Carmichael, cofounder of Philadelphia roasting company La Colombe Coffee, as he trav- els around the globe in search of not just excellent coffee, but edgy, sometimes risky adventures—he has encountered guns and violence (and even death) in coffee-producing countries including Thailand, Mexico, and Colombia. Todd says his goal with the show is to communicate his love of both coffee and travel to a global audience. "I approach it like I would anything I love and want to share," he says. "I try to connect it to the bigger picture: people, cultures, history, etc. Specialty cof- fee is not an isolated world or phenomenon; it's part of a greater something. I try to keep that vision and tell that story." The third season of Dangerous Grounds has wrapped and will premiere soon; among other things, it will include footage of Carmichael's winning rou- tine at last year's Northeast Brewers Cup and sub- sequent U.S. Brewers Cup performance, where he unveiled the brewing device he helped design, the Dragon. "This season I focus on less-tricky places such as Panama, and even include Brewers Cup moments and brewing gear in Tokyo," he says. "I'm really proud of what we got away with this year—I let my nerd out." Clips from the new season of Dangerous Grounds may start popping up during your Internet-surfing sessions soon, and they surely won't be the only video representation for specialty coffee in 2015 as the category continues to move steadily into the mainstream. Let's just hope they continue balancing truth and education, even if it's with sarcasm and a little bit of cynicism. —Chris Ryan Todd Carmichael is the star of Dangerous Grounds, a Travel Channel television series which follows him on buying trips to coffee-producing countries for La Colombe Coffee, the company he co-owns in Philadelphia.
