THE BARISTA GUILD OF EUROPE CAMP BRINGS TOGETHER NOVICE AND VETERAN COFFEE PROFESSIONALS ON THE ITALIAN COAST IN SEPTEMBER GIVEN THE STRONG ORGANIZATION and impressive development of the Barista Guild of Europe (BGE), it's hard to believe the group, which exists under the umbrella of the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE), is only in its third year. The BGE Barista Camp debuted in September of 2014 to great success: The three-day event for 150 baris- tas from all levels of professional experience offered cutting-edge content from industry heavyweights like Square Mile's James Hoffmann, Finnish barista trainer Kalle Freese, Icelandic coffee icon Sonja Grant, and oth- ers leading participants in three separate learning tracks based on their experience and growth ambitions. Barista Magazine's publisher Kenneth R. Olson was enormously impressed by the inaugural BGE Camp. "Many of the participants were brand-new to the barista community, and they jumped into the educa- tional opportunities at camp head-on," he recalls. "The environment was inclusive and intimate—it was very different than the competition or trade-show setting." In its second year, the BGE's Barista Camp is set to be bigger—now with 200 participants—and more diverse, with five as opposed to three educational tracks, from barista and sensory foundation (Raphael track); green and sensory foundation (Michaelangelo track); barista interme- diate (Leonardo track); brewing intermediate (Donatello track); and sensory intermediate (Splinter track). Camp will take place in the Italian coastal city of Riccione from September 23–26. The registration fee of 575 ( 525 for SCAE members) includes three nights of full-board accommodation in shared rooms at the Hotel Corallo; enrollment and certification in one track of SCAE Coffee Diploma System modules; access to all workshops, lectures, and social activities; and transport from Bologna or Ancona airports to and from camp. A hands-on workshop from the 2014 Barista Camp is pictured above. "The level of education participants receive, and the community- building opportunities are just amazing. We have worked very hard to keep the registration fee as low as possible so that baristas from all income levels can attend."
