CANADA CROWNS FIRST NATIONAL LATTE ART CHAMPION, INTRODUCES COFFEE IN GOOD SPIRITS TO EAGER VANCOUVER CROWD THANKS ALMOST ENTIRELY to the efforts of Dalla Corte Espresso Systems' Sevan Istanboulian and his staff, the nation of Canada celebrated its first sanctioned Latte Art Championship in September in conjunction with the Canadian Coffee & Tea Show in Vancouver, B.C. As the former World Latte Art and World Coffee In Good Spirits official espresso machine sponsor (2012–2014), Dalla Corte became heavily invested in the success of baristas competing in these World Coffee Events (WCE) contests. The Milan-based company launched DC Campus in 2012, which brought national champions in latte art and Good Spirits to Italy to practice and learn from one another. Dalla Corte continues as the official espresso machine sponsor of the Canadian Latte Art Championship, and the United States Latte Art Championship, which it also helped navigate to legitimacy, sending the first sanctioned U.S. Latte Art Champion to the World Latte Art Championship in 2014. Sevan, whose Café Mystique is based in Montreal and is the distributor of Dalla Corte espresso machines through- out North America, has been determined to help both the United States and Canada achieve validity as authorized nations to have national champions compete in the interna- tional-level championships. To do this, the United States and Canada were required by the WCE to first host exhibition latte art events, which were essentially practice runs for the sanctioned competitions. Having successfully achieved that thanks in large part, too, to Dalla Corte's Skip Finley, Canada finally realized its first sanctioned national latte art champi- onship in September. Sixteen of Canada's best baristas took to the stage under the watch of head judge Sonja Grant of Iceland, over the course of two days in Vancouver, B.C. They demonstrated their best freestyle latte art pours. Six made it to the final round, where they poured three drinks for Sonja's panel of judges: a free-pour latte, a signature latte, and a macchiato. In the end, Ian Chagunda of Matchstick Coffee took first place and the honor of representing Canada at the World Latte Art Championship. He will travel to Shanghai to com- pete in that event in March. —Sarah Allen 2015 CANADIAN LATTE ART CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS WINNER!
