Coach of the Year If we learned anything from binge-watching Friday Night Lights, it's that a great coach is equal parts patient and tough, exacting and kind—and those happen to be words we'd use to describe 2014 World Barista Champion Hidenori Izaki, who recently announced the launch of his own training and consulting business, Samurai Coffee Experience. We'd add a few more adjectives for Hidenori—or Hide (HEE-day) for short: brilliant, mischievous, charismatic, gracious. Oh, and how about accomplished? Hide trained reigning WBC Champ Sasa Sestic of Australia, and he's currently coaching French Champ Charlotte Malaval, who already took an impressive sixth place at the 2015 WBC. If anyone can get her to the winner's circle this year, it's probably Hide. He's Coach Eric Taylor–approved. www.samuraicoffeeexperience.com Start a Revolution It may sound confusing to say that a city associated with café culture for a century is in the midst of a coffee revolution, but it's the truth: Paris is suddenly a hotspot for third-wave shops doing manual brews, small-lot roasting, specialty drinks, and painstakingly crafted coffee drinks. Paris Coffee Revolution by Jeff Hargrove and Anna Brones is a beautiful literary and photographic account of how the City of Lights got to this rousing time in its storied coffee history. "The book came to life at a turning point, a huge turning point in the [specialty] coffee scene in Paris," Jeff tells us. "In 2013, we started to see more places opening, and then shortly afterwards I might say that the tidal wave hit and the scene exploded. The book is there to document where it all came from, who was behind it and who made it happen." www.pariscoffeerevolution.fr That's Right, We Said, "Draft Latte" La Colombe owner Todd Carmichael says they've cracked the code on canning draft lattes—and we didn't even know it needed to be done! But hey, these brand-new canned RTDs sure do sound delicious: cold-brewed espresso, velvety milk, and a hint of cane sugar. "But Todd," you might be thinking, "how do you replicate the frothy yumminess of a freshly made latte, in a can?" The famous founder says that Draft Latte's patent-pending pressurization process "ensures that the milk froths and combines perfectly with the coffee to create the full, textured mouthfeel of a traditional hot latte." Well, all righty then. www.lacolombe.com Ally Reinvents the Origin Trip Sponsorship With all the changes taking place regarding barista competitions, we're pretty sure Brazilian coffee merchants Ally Coffee's new role as Origin Trip Sponsor is one of the best. Hold onto your portafilters, though, people: There's a twist. Given his experience as a veteran Brewers Cup judge, Ally's director of specialty coffee, Ricardo Pereira, reimagined what the Origin Trip Sponsorship would be: Not only are the top two from the United States Barista Championship going on a trip to Brazil with Ally this fall, but so will the top finishers from the Brewers Cup and Roaster Championship. Barista Mag's own Sarah Allen will tag along to chronicle the champions' South American adventures, as Ally takes them to some of the famed coffee origin's most exceptional farms. www.allycoffee.com From le : Salvadoran coff ee producer Emilio Lopez Diaz, French Barista Champion Charlo e Malaval, and Hidenori Izaki, on a sourcing trip to El Salvador recently. 20 barista magazine
