C O N T R I B U T O R S 1 Nora Burkey began working in coffee in 2007 as a barista in New York City, and started her career in international development as a volunteer in Cambodia in 2010. While obtaining a master's degree in sustainable development at the School for International Training, she conducted her field research with coffee cooperatives in Nicaragua and Peru, evaluating a women's empowerment initiative intended to recognize the unpaid work of women in supply chains. In 2014, she cofounded the nonprofit The Chain Collaborative, which intends to facilitate collaboration between members of the coffee industry in order to contribute to sustain- able projects in the coffee lands. She has consulted for various coffee companies and nonprofits, and has written for numerous coffee magazines and blogs. She lives in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. (Check Yourself, p. 58) 2 Andy Freivogel is founder of the retail technology-consulting firm Science (www.scienceretail.com), which he started after 20 years of work in retail coffee and technology consulting. In addition to guiding specialty and boutique retail customers through the land- scape of POS systems, guest Wi-Fi solutions, and PCI compliance, he also enjoys free jazz, black metal, skateboarding, street art, and cooking West African dishes. Andy and his wife live in Oak Park, Ill., with their two children, a chihuahua, a pit bull, two cats, and a frog. (Tech Support, p. 68) 3 Stephanie Frommlet is a chalkboard artist and freelancer living in Portland, Ore. She's studied classical animation, and loves to stare at fonts. She once worked as a mall Easter Bunny. Her work can be viewed at www.stephaniefrommlet.com. (Illustration for Pop City, p. 70) 4 Helena Krekling is a lifestyle photographer based in Oslo, Norway, where she works for BRYGG magazine. She uses her favorite coffee bar both as a working space and a free zone. The amazing baristas there are the closest she has to colleagues. She thinks they are the best. (Photography for Check Yourself, p. 58) 5 Erin Meister (you can call her just "Meister") has always led a kind of weird, caffeinated double life. As a coffee professional, she's been a barista, retail manager, wholesale-support representative, and educator; as a journalist she's written and/or edited work for The Boston Globe , The Washington Post , Serious Eats , Saveur. com, and Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine—as well as the gem you're holding in your hot little hands. These days she can be found selling green coffee for Café Imports, riding her bike around the beautiful Twin Cities, and finally (finally!) taking a break from blogging. You can email her at meister@justmeister.com. (Master Q+A, p. 80) 6 Mayita Mendez worked as a professional photographer for many years, and now works as a wholesale representative for Irving Farm Coffee Roasters. Her family proudly grows delicious coffee in El Salvador: Natamaya and Talnamica Coffee. (Photography for Check Yourself, p. 58) 7 Alabaster Pizzo is an illustrator and cartoonist who lives and works in Queens, N.Y. She is best known for self-publishing three comic series, Mimi and the Wolves . She also works part-time as a barista for Irving Farm Coffee Roasters in New York City. (Illustration for Tech Support, p. 68) 8 Sarah Richmond is a recent transplant to the Asheville, N.C., area from Berkeley, Calif., where she brings over 12 years of experience in the coffee industry. Wearing many hats over the years as a barista, trainer, coffee roaster, manager, and lover of all things coffee, she is most passionate about the coffee community in Asheville and its neighboring cities. Sarah can usually be found hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her fiancé and 2-year-old pup, Macky. Together, they live in a cabin in the woods located in Black Mountain, N.C., and are enjoying the fullness good mountain living can bring. Sarah currently works at Mountain Air Roasting as their wholesale account manager, and is part of the production team. (Foam, p. 22) 9 Ashley Rodriguez thought that she'd take a break from teaching middle-school science and putz around in a coffee shop for a few months. She ended up digging it way more than teaching (and was vaguely better at it). After spending five years making coffee in New York, she now works for Sightglass Coffee in San Francisco. Follow her on Twitter at @ashcommonname. (New Adventures in Cold Brew, p. 64) 10 Viktor Sloth is a Danish photographer and director with the world as his office. Directing and shooting with a unique and dis- tinguished eye for composition and visual storytelling, Viktor is behind campaigns for a number of esteemed names and brands all over the world. The inspiration for his art comes from many places, but most of all from music, nature, and people. In his work, Viktor travels the world, and seeks to explore the unexplored and see the unseen. Inspired by everything he sees and everyone he meets, he has developed his own artistic language, which translates into a certain cinematic feeling in his work, varying between fashion shoots in New York, L.A., or Europe; commercials for different artists; and documenting volunteer work in Nepal. (Cover and pho- tography for Sonja Zweidick, p. 52) 11 Chad Trewick has long been a champion of responsible sourcing. He's spent his years in the specialty-coffee industry building bridg- es between wide-ranging stakeholders, from coffee farm to cupping room to boardroom. His focus (and personal mission) is to preserve access to coffee by strengthening the entire value chain and ensur- ing scalable mutually beneficial relationships. After more than two decades working primarily on the roaster side in the specialty-cof- fee industry, plus time spent gaining a deeper understanding of the financial side of the coffee market, Chad formed Reciprocafé LLC, a consultancy service that prioritizes shared value and measured and meaningful coffee value chain work and support. He is on the SCAA's board of directors and is a liaison to the organization's Sustainability Council, working toward embedding responsible con- siderations and behaviors throughout the specialty-coffee industry. (Behind the Beauty, p. 76) 12 Eton Tsuno has been working in the coffee industry for 17 years. Coffee has taken him from being a competitive barista in the early and mid 2000s, to holding jobs with titles like Coffee Savant and Chief Espresso Officer. Currently, Eton travels to origin six months of the year as the green coffee buyer and director of coffee for Temple Coffee Roasters in Sacramento, Calif. When he's not at origin, Eton is outdoors, palate training (wine), and enjoying his daughter (Sophie the French Bulldog).
