CONTRIBUTORS 1 2 3 3 1 Tracy Allen is CEO of Brewed Behavior, founded to offer comprehen- sive support to all segments of the coffee industry. After graduating from the University of Missouri with a B.A. in economics, he was re- cruited by Procter and Gamble to take on the newly created position of Beverage Specialist. He went on to manage operations for a small Midwest specialty coffee roaster, which led him to the position of VP of Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Co., where he launched and grew Zoka's wholesale division. As one of the original members of the U.S. Barista Championship Committee and the fi rst chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee for the World Barista Championship, he has trained multiple national and regional barista champions and served as a judge and judges' trainer for the USBC and WBC. He is also an SCAA "Supertaster," certifi ed cupper and Q-grader instructor. (Cashbox, p. 69) 2 Michael Harwood had the time of his life at Camp Pull-A-Shot and he owes it all to you. When not glamping, you might fi nd this BGA Level 2 and SCAA IDP Certifi ed, sleepy-eyed barista working at Carrboro Coffee Roasters, Caffe Driade, or the Open Eye Cafe, all in sunny North Carolina. Through volunteering as the Southeast Chap- ter Representative for the Barista Guild of America and competing in the United States Barista Championship circuit, Michael has found a family of friends who are truly inspiring. Originally from the Midwest, Michael grew up in North Carolina, then spent a few years in New York City before returning to the Tar Heel State. (Field Report: Camp Pull-A-Shot, p. 24) 3 Tim Hill grew up in just outside Chicago and studied fi ction writing and fi ne art at Colombia College Chicago. Tim moved to North Caro- lina in 2004 and worked as a barista. After a short time in North Car- olina, Tim discovered Counter Culture through a friend and started working in the production department bagging coffee. Since starting at Counter Culture, Tim has worked as a bagger, blender, deliverer, roaster, roasting manager, and now is one of the coffee buyers and the quality manager. For additional Tim information, please see Tim. (Photos for Coffee Grading, p. 72) 4 Sam Lewontin lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan, where he manages Everyman Espresso both in the East Village and in Soho. He loves great food and drink of all stripes, and Tweets about both entirely too often. His jeans are notably tighter than they were when he lived on the West Coast, and it's probably only right that you mock him for it just a little. (Pull, p. 22) 5 Todd Mackey lives with his wife, Grace, and daughter, Ayla Mae, in Providence, Rhode Island. He is currently the QC Coordinator & Trainer for InterAmerican Coffee's Northeast offi ce where he operates Coffee Solutions, a subsidiary of IAC offering education and training for all segments of the coffee industry. Todd is a licensed Q-Grader, currently the BGA Northeast Chapter Representative, Co-Founder of the Providence Coffee Society (PCS), BGA Levels 1 & 2 Certifi ed Barista, and has served as a USBC Sensory Judge. You can also catch him pulling shots and pouring milk for Bolt Coffee Company on their pop-up espresso bar. (Coffee Grading, p. 72) 8 9 6 Rodrigo Mussapp is the Director of Photography and a producer for MT Producciones in Guatemala, and has produced projects for Corpo- racion Multi Inversiones, Fundación Juan Bautista Gutierrez Disagro, Dell, Pepsico, Duwest, and others. Prior to founding MT Producciones, Rodrigo was a producer and photographer for Miracle Factory Stu- dios, which produced TV commercials for Licorera Nacional, BBDO (Bayer, Pepsi, Gatorade), and others. Rodrigo's other work includes serving as a producer and computer graphics coordinator of special effects for The Chronicles of Narnia, a fi lm directed by Andrew Adam- son. Rodrigo studied Theater and Drama in the Conservancy of Arts, Conservatorio Castella, in Costa Rica, and took courses in fi lm di- recting at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Theater, Film and Television. (Cover photo and article photography, p. 44) 8 barista magazine 7 Melissa Myer is the CEO and owner of EspressoParts.com based out of Lacey, Washington. She started her career in specialty coffee in 2006 when she opened and operated a turn-key Italian inspired café in downtown Olympia, Washington. After selling the café, she joined the Espresso Parts team as general manager for one year before buy- ing the company with her husband in 2012. They currently reside in Olympia, Wash., with their two chickens, and are expecting their fi rst baby this September. (Customized, p. 62) 8 David Ringwood has been involved in the specialty coffee industry for more than six years. He was a delivery driver for Olympia Cof- fee Roasting in their early days, then became lead technician for Espresso Service (EPNW). His current position as head of Equipment Customization, Restoration and Design for Espresso Parts in Lacey, Wash., allows him to geek out with two of his loves, coffee and clas- sic espresso machines. He gets inspired by 1970s motorcycles and is an electromechanical freak. He loves the Pacifi c Northwest, fi shing and spending time with his family and dogs. (Customized, p. 62) 9 A full-time graphic designer and aspiring photographer, Amanda Wilson loves the challenge of shooting barista competitions and always enjoys the beautiful detail each barista includes in his/her setup. Born and raised in Portland, Ore., Amanda discovered barista competitions while working as a designer and art director for both Fresh Cup and Barista Magazine. After a sunshine-fi lled stint as a designer at Outside magazine, she can now be found dodging rain- drops in Seattle. (Photography: WBC Special Section, p. 41)
