ABCS GOES TO NYC FOUNDED IN 2004, the American Barista & Coffee School (ABC's) in Portland, Ore., enjoys an international reputation as a consulting and training center of the highest quality. With experienced instructors and timely course subjects, ABC's has also built into its curriculum the rich coffee culture of the surrounding area; after all, Portland, Ore., is considered not only one of the most established specialty coffee cities in the world, but one that is constantly changing and developing. ABC's will always be headquartered in Portland, but Bruce Milletto, ABC's founder and president, and his son, Matt Milletto, the company's vice president, were tapped into the industry enough to see the vibrancy of the coffee culture blooming out East, and the need for instruction like that which ABC's could provide, in the heart of it all: New York City. Presenting ABC's in NYC. A pared down version of ABC's wildly popular five-day Business & Barista Consulting Workshop, the three-day workshop in New York is focused more narrowly on menu building and quality control. In late August, Matt Milletto along with director of training Tom Pikaart, and lead barista trainer Chris Deferio, taught the first class at ABC's new satellite school in Brooklyn. "We have wanted to expand our training to the East Coast for years," says Matt Milletto. "There are obviously some great perks to visiting Portland, but we wanted to offer a pared down, hands on focused training class in New York City for baristas, managers, and shop owners who are not able to travel to the Pacific Northwest. We have a great team of trainers in place and look forward to the regional classes, as they open up our market to those local to the New York City area and surrounding states." Classes are kept small and intimate for the most effective hands-on training and education, so sessions fill up fast. For more information, visit coffeebusiness.com, or call 800.655.3955. The American Barista & Coffee School, which is headquartered in Portland, Ore., debuted its satellite school in Brooklyn, N.Y., in late August. YOUR STELLA ARTWORK HERE THE ART OF UNIC Baristas have a natural tendency toward art and music and literature; they're creative by nature, passionate, and driven in spirit. The folks at Unic know that, so they're posing a challenge to baristas (as well as any other coffee professional) everywhere: Create art around the Stella di Caffè espresso machine. Here's how it works: Coffee professionals are invited to Tel: 425.353.2700 «» 866.295.UNIC «» unic-usa.com Facebook : Stella di Caffè «» twitter.com/stelladicaffe The one rule of the art contest Unic is hosting for 2013 is that the Stella di Caffè should be a part of the artwork. Besides that, however, the sky's—make that your imagination's—the limit! create art in any medium—painting, wood carving, sculpture, photo—that features the Stella di Caffè espresso machine. Then they snap a high-resolution (at least 300 dpi) image of the masterpiece, email it to Anastasia Chovan at Unic (a-chovan@ unic-sa.com), and you'll be entered to win the big prize: your artwork featured in a full page ad in Barista Magazine. The first winner will be featured in the December/January 2013 issue of Barista Magazine, and there will be five more chances to win after that. So get crackin'! Wash off those brushes, dust the kiln, and be creative! And be on the lookout for some magical interpretations of the Stella di Caffè to come in issues of Barista Magazine throughout 2013. www.baristamagazine.com 17
