By Michelle F ster chelle Foster While square in the 40s and 50s meant "uncool", the Square Card Reader for iPads is reframing the word as something far more hip. Multiple iPad-based point of sale (POS) systems are available at the iTunes store, including the Square, which first appeared as a credit card reader and expanded to a POS system companion to the credit card processing system. Twitter's cofounder Jack Dorsey is behind Square, along with Jim McKelvey, a glass blower and entrepreneur. After McKelvey lost a $2000 glass sale because he couldn't accept a credit card payment, he joined forces with Dorsey to invent Square as a solution to small-business credit card disbursement options. According to many previously cash-only merchants who now use Square, the simple POS and card reader boosted sales by 20 percent. www.baristamagazine.com 57
