CONTRIBUTORS Michelle Foster is a roving barista, reporter, critic, and barista-com- petition judge. She was most recently stationed in Montauk, N.Y., at CoffeeTauk for the summer season before fi nishing her masters in sculpture and art history at the University of Memphis. (POS 2.0. p. 56) 1 1 2 3 Demitri Fregosi is a longtime Graphic Designer and Art Director with a love for publishing, music design, and illustration. He has followed a wandering career path working all over the design industry—from mag- azines to hotels to grocery stores—slowly but surely defi ning his style as a poor man's Andy Warhol. A lover of discarded pop-culture trends, he is likely to bring the subtle cultural importance of Miami Vice, Astro Boy, or ska music into any conversation. Demitri is currently residing in Portland, Ore., with his wife, Sarah. (Barista Magazine's new art director) 2 3 Nathan "Lenny" Howes started as a barista in 2006 at Morning Light Coffee Roasters, on the recommendation of his future wife, Jaxi. He fell in love with coffee (and her), and currently works at Off the Leaf Coffee Bar in Billings, Montana. Nathan headed the organization of the last two annual Montana Barista Jams. His friends and family laugh at how he won't go anywhere without a Chemex, grinder and specialty coffee in tow. Don't call it snobbery—call it portable fellowship. (Pull, p. 23) 4 4 56 Over the past 16 months, Mike Marquard has been tinkering with the retail coffee experience in St. Louis. As the general manager at Half & Half, he has created a coffee program that complements chef/owner Mike Randolph's adventurous breakfast menu. On Mondays and Tues- days, he can be found trying to wrangle his two adorable children about town. In a perfect world, he'd fi nd more time for his patient wife, his kitchen, barista competitions, and his band. (Cover photo & photos for Marcus Boni, p. 60) 5 7 Bruce Milletto is recognized by the press and the coffee industry inter- nationally as the voice of the specialty coffee industry. He has been inter- viewed by or quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, "60 Minutes", Kiplinger's, Starbucks Annual Report, Forbes, The Economist, Harvard Management Update, Crain's Business Review, The Seattle Times, The Oregonian, The Washington Post, Business Week, and Entrepreneur. The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) named Bruce one of its 20 Coffee Luminaries, and designated him Author of the Year. (The Mature Manila Café Scene, p. 43) 8 Matt Milletto has extensive experience in retail coffee, and has man- aged multiple coffeehouses. Matt has personally trained more than 1,500 new coffee retail business owners and barista trainers/manag- ers over the past 10 years. He is also the founder of BaristaExchange. com and is a head judge for all Coffee Fest Latte Art Competitions. As Bellissimo's Vice President, Matt coordinates all individual and cor- porate consulting programs, and does most in-house consulting ser- vices with Bellissimo's clients and past ABC graduates. (Field Report: The Philippines, p. 40) 6 9 Kristina Morris Heredia's interest in coffee and coffee-growing com- munities, and a never-ending desire to make the world a more just place—she is a Libra after all—are what attracted her to Coffee Kids. While her academic background is in anthropology and Spanish, her professional experience has been in writing, Web work and conscien- tious marketing. (Field Report: Mexico, p. 38) 7 10 11 Andrew Mulder has been in the coffee business for about fi ve years, and ever since the beginning, coffee has captivated his imagination. He dove into specialty coffee and learns more everyday while managing a shop called Hubbard and Cravens, which has multiple locations in Indianapolis. (Pull, p. 23) 8 9 12 10 barista magazine Noah Namowicz works for Café Imports, an independent U.S.-based specialty green-coffee importer. Noah handles international roaster cli- ents and is the director of marketing for the company. He is a Barista Guild of America executive council member, a level 1 certifi ed barista, and IDP certifi ed. Noah lives in St. Paul, Minn., with his wife, Megan, and daughter, Bryn. (Pull, p. 22) Sabrina Scott is a professional illustrator and amateur herb- alist living on the third fl oor of an old Victorian house in Cana- da. As a youngster she braved the varied wildernesses of Colo- rado, Ottawa, California, Montana, and Florida before settling in Toronto as her beloved home. In her work she explores indigenous spir- itualities, magic, ethnobotany, technology, patterns, textures, folklore, fauna, and everything in between. You can check out her work at http://sabrinascott.ca & follow her on Twitter @sabrinadraws. (Illustra- tion for Greening Your Café, p. 68) 10 Emelyne Smith has worked for Joe NYC for three years, where she is a barista, educator and human resources manager. Originally from Ithaca, N.Y., she attended college in New Jersey with a journalism con- centration, and fell in love with coffee while working for Small World in Princeton. Emelyne began drinking coffee at age 11, when the only thing that could get her out of bed and onto the bus was a piping hot mug—black, no sugar. When she's not at Joe, Emelyne is a sometime freelance writer whose work has appeared in BUST magazine; a horror- movie fanatic; and a devoted dog mother. (Pull, p. 21) 11 Chad Trewick, senior director of coffee and tea, began his career with Caribou Coffee in 1993 as a barista. His charge today is to uphold qual- ity standards while encouraging farmers to engage in Rainforest Alli- ance certifi cation to comply with Caribou's commitment to 100%. Chad travels in search of the world's fi nest coffees, to support key supply re- lationships, and to identify where positive impacts can be made. Chad serves on the SCAA's Board of Directors and is liaison to the Sustain- ability Council. He works to mainstream responsible practices and is passionate about coffee and sustainability.
