Clockwise from top: It was standing-room-only at The Coffeewoman event in Berkeley, Calif., on a mild evening in early June. Attendees drove from as far as Sacramento, Chico, and San Jose, Calif., to take part in the conversation about some of the most timely and relevant topics facing women, people of color, gender nonconforming, and transgender baristas, roasters, green buyers, and other coffee professionals. As summer is typically a slow time for coffee gatherings, members of the larger Bay Area Coffee Community enjoyed the chance to catch up with one another at the event, which was free and open to all. Rosie Laird of AKA Coffee spoke animatedly of the companyʼs roasting works in Oakland, and soon-to-open kiosk and café in Emeryville. Elizabeth Goldblatt, second from left, shares a story of challenges she faced in building her career, on the "How Did I Get Here?" panel.
