P U L L : E V E N T S We went to press with the December 2017 + January 2018 issue of Barista Magazine the day a er the conclusion of the massive coff ee events in Seoul, South Korea, so we have postponed our extensive World Barista Championship (WBC) coverage until the February + March 2018 issue. To tide you over until then, here are some snapshots from the historic WBC, Ca fé Sh ow Seoul, and World Coff ee Le aders Forum of 2017. Photos clockwise from top le : Dale Harris of the United Kingdom was crowned World Barista Championship at the conclusion of an intense four days of exceptional performances by the national barista champions of 58 countries. Martin Shabaya, the barista champion of Kenya, made history as the fi rst representative from an African country ever to advance to the semifi nal round. Martin's appearance was the result of the new "wild card" element of the team competition: The 58 competing baristas were assembled into 10 teams—determined by their countries' past WBC rankings—to participate in an off -stage challenge. The winning team— Team Tamper, which included the champions of Canada, China, Italy, Romania, and Kenya—was decided by the cumulative score of all team members' individual preliminary-round WBC performances. Then the highest scoring team member not already qualifi ed to advance to the semifi nal round based on score was deemed the "wild card" semifi nalist. Former barista champion of the U.K. Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood spoke on the trend of automation in coff ee-equipment manufacturing at the sold-out World Coff ee Leaders Forum, an all-day event held in conjunction with the Café Show on November 9. More than 100,000 people a ended the Café Show, which hosted the WBC at the COEX Convention Center in Seoul, and it seemed everyone wanted coff ee from one of the three bars operated by energetic and dedicated volunteers around the competition area.
