Whole Foods Market Strada The people at Whole Foods Market in Texas contacted us about a customized machine for a new store. They came to us because of our work on the custom machine at Mavelous in San Francisco (profiled in the August/September 2012 issue of Barista Magazine, in "Customized, Part One"). They loved the glass and wood bodywork and the exposed interior with the colored boiler. They had a color scheme in mind and some artwork, and from there we suggested using the La Marzocco Strada as the platform with a new and original glass and wood design to reveal the inner workings of the machine for the customer's view. We used black walnut for the framework and trim, which supports the horizontal tempered glass slats. The glass slats evoke the look of an antique rolltop desk, and the stained and finished walnut framework and trim bring a warmth and softness that contrasts nicely with the polished stainless, purple sides, and orange steam boiler. We had one of the slats etched with the customer's design using a sandblasting process that produces a lovely frosted appearance. We replaced the stock removable side panels with acrylic pieces to expose the interior even more. Some wiring cleanup and tubing adjustments were necessary for clearance and aesthetic reasons.
