P U L L : E V E N T S GLOBAL SPECIALTY COFFEE EXPO SEATTLE, WASHINGTON APRIL 19–22, 2018 PHOTOS BY JORDAN SANCHEZ AND JAKE OLSON FOR THE SCA To celebrate its 30th year as the leading specialty-coff ee expo and conference for an international community of coff ee producers, roasters, importers, exporters, baristas, retailers, cuppers, designers, and countless other coff ee professionals, the Specialty Coff ee Association's Global Specialty Coff ee Expo took place over four sun-soaked days in April in Sea le. More than 10,000 people from dozens of countries a ended to source products, meet with partners, socialize, and compete in a variety of coff ee contests. Here are snapshots of some of the event's most memorable moments. Clockwise from top le : Ken Selby li s the cup that will win him the title of United States Cup Tasters Champion, while everyone's favorite coff ee-competition emcee, Marcus Boni, excitedly reveals the results. Hailing from Equator Coff ees and Teas in the San Francisco Bay Area, Emmeline Wang earned a spot in the fi nal round of the United States Brewers Cup. People say this annual conference is like a coff ee-family reunion, and that's true, though whose family is as geeked-out about coff ee every minute of every day as these folks? While the enormous trade show took place one fl oor below, the Roaster Village and coff ee competition stages occupied a space that felt more festival than expo, with time spent in engaged conversations, focused on the tense moments of competition, and catching up with old friends. Cole McBride (le ) and T. Ben Fischer embrace as their names are announced as fi rst- and second-place in the United States Barista Championship. The friendship and show of support for fellow contenders is one of the things that makes these coff ee competitions great. 26 barista magazine
