Not even he knows! He's happy to call it home, though, and he currently works for Café Imports, heading up sales in Asia. Dan's previous career was in the field of psychology, which thor- oughly prepared him for the coffee industry. He loves R&B; and cured meats. (Field Report: Ethiopia, p. 42) 5 Ben Jones is a teacher who prefers working in cafés over class- rooms. He recently returned to his hometown to manage Ristretto Roasters' café in Northwest Portland, Ore., where you can see part of his collection of vintage typewriters. (Creating Connoisseurs, p. 76) 6 Erin Meister is a coffee professional with a totally-not-at-all-secret double life as a writer and a journalist. (Worst. Clark. Kent. Ever.) When she's in her coffee cups, she's a regional representative for Counter Culture Coffee's Counter Intelligence education program. She has written about coffee for Serious Eats (www.seriouseats.com), and has also contributed editorial and/or written work for fine publications such as The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Time Out NY , and this gem you've got in your hot little hands. (Foam, p. 20; Ahead of the Roast Curve, p. 72) 7 Andy Reiland is a videographer, photographer, graphic designer, and self-proclaimed creative, working as Café Imports' media pro. Andy's professional background stems from his camp-counselor/directing years at YMCA Camp Minikani in Hubertus, Wis. After completing a bachelor's of arts in entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas, and a bachelor's degree in studio art from Macalester College, Reiland owned and operated a printmaking studio in Minneapolis called Freehand Press, where he offered branding, design, and screen-print- ing services. Calling upon coffee as a muse, Andy's mission is to supplement the importing process with proper documentation, aiming to pass along the story and celebrate the remarkable places from which the company gets its coffee through a visual narrative. (Photos for Field Report: Ethiopia, p. 42) 8 Chris Ryan is story editor at Sustainable Harvest Coffee Importers in Portland, Ore., where he generates articles about coffee producers in the company's supply chain to share with the roasters who buy from them. He also helps lead the content side of Sustainable Harvest's Let's Talk Coffee events. Previously he was on the editorial staff at Fresh Cup Magazine for almost nine years, serving as editor-in-chief for more than half that time. In his spare time, Chris runs, reads, and plays music. (Foam, p. 18) 9 Jon Shadel is a Portland, Ore.–based writer and lover of fine coffees. He writes for Oregon Business and Oregon Home magazines. He's also the founder of Rusty Bike Media, a storytelling agency helping startups, lifestyle brands, and nonprofits engage their target audience. With his years of experience as a barista, he loves coffee culture and is often found furiously typing in a cozy café. (Field Report: Trinidad, p. 36) 10 Shanny Sena was born and raised in Singapore. She now lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband and two dogs. She is a barista, aspiring coffee competitor, and consultant for PLAnet Cup USA. In 2012, she cofounded Filter Coffee Roasters, which remains the only roaster in Melbourne to focus exclusively on filter roasts and brewing methods. She currently crafts espresso at Reverence.
