F O A M : N E W S LA MARZOCCO EXPANDS GLOBAL REACH TO SPAIN LA MARZOCCO IS RAISING the (espresso) bar in Barcelona, with the addition of a brand-new authorized distributor of La Marzocco machines in Spain, housed in a sleek and stylish little coffee shop and Specialty Coffee Association of Europe–certified training lab: True Artisan Café. The shop's owner, Elisabet Sereno, has long been a part of the burgeoning specialty-coffee scene in Spain: The Barcelona native has been a Cup of Excellence juror since 2006, and is also an active judge on the national and World Barista Championship circuit, in addition to founding a Barista Academy in Spain in 2010. "La Marzocco Spain" was officially unveiled this past October, though Elisabet's personally been an official distributor of the company's equipment since 2013. With this expansion into Spain, La Marzocco now has major offices in six regions, including the United States, South Korea, AustralAsia (serving Australia and New Zealand), the U.K., and of course the fac- tory and home office in Italy. Elisabet's lovely shop will act not only as a center for the coffee community in Barcelona, but will also be a showcase for the newest and most cutting-edge La Marzocco machines available. Customers enjoy coffee from a rotating monthly roster of roasters (say that three times fast), transformed into classic espresso beverages on handmade La Marzocco equipment by expert baristas. Since its first national barista championship in 2005, Spain's demand and appreciation for high-quality specialty coffee has steadily increased; the country is among the top importing coun- tries of coffee, with an average annual tally of 4.3 million bags. The Spanish chapter of the SCAE was founded in 2008, and has been providing training and inspiration for coffee professionals throughout the country ever since. Now, thanks in part to Elisabet and La Marzocco's devotion to fostering specialty-coffee growth and development, that inspiration will lead to more delicious caffeination throughout the city and country. True Artisan Café is located at Passatge Sant Benet, 6, Barcelona, and Elisabet can be reached at elisabet@lamarazocco.es. ¡Salud! —Erin Meister With the recent opening of La Marzocco Spain, the boutique espresso machine company now has offices in six regions globally, including the United States, South Korea, AustralAsia, the U.K., and Italy. 22 barista magazine
